This chapter examines the content and context of what is termed “postwar liberalism”, which coupled a new commitment to anti-discrimination with a rejection of the more class-conscious and social democratic orientation of the New Deal.
Postwar liberalism represents a new understanding of American liberalism that centrally featured a strong, principled stand against racial discrimination. Ileana Rodríguez considers several Latin American nations that govern under the name of liberalism yet display a shocking range of nondemocratic features.
In her political, cultural, and philosophical analysis, she examines these environments in which liberalism seems to have reached its limits, as the universalizing project gives way to Cited by: John Gray's new book gives post-liberal theory a more definite content.
It does so by considering particular thinkers in the history of political thought, by criticizing the conventional wisdom, liberal and socialist, of the Western academic class, and most directly by specifying what remains of value in liberalism.
